Tendon Transfer

If imbalance in the strength of various muscles leads to impaired movement or function in the arms or legs, tendon transfer(s) should be considered as part of treatment.

If imbalance in the strength of various muscles leads to impaired movement or function in the arms or legs, tendon transfer(s) should be considered as part of treatment.

Tendon transfer is performed for the following purposes:

  • 1.To provide strength for a function impaired due to one or more non-functioning muscles.
  • 2.To prevent deformity caused by strength imbalances in various muscles acting on a joint.
  • 3.To prevent dislocations by ensuring balance between the forces of muscles acting on a joint.

When performing a tendon transfer, the following factors should be considered:

  • 1.The transferred tendon and its associated muscle must have sufficient strength to perform the expected function.
  • 2.The tendon must be positioned in a way that allows it to function optimally in its new location.
  • 3.The tendon must have adequate flexibility.
  • 4.The blood and nerve supply of the muscle associated with the transferred tendon should be preserved.
  • 5.There should be no limitation of movement in the joint where functional recovery is expected after the tendon transfer.
  • 6.The tendon should be secured under appropriate tension in its new position.
