The diagnosis of a ganglion cyst is made through physical examination, various imaging techniques, or aspiration.

It is a benign mass most commonly seen around the hand and wrist. Less frequently, it can also appear around the foot and ankle.

The exact cause of these cysts is not clearly known.

The cyst is filled with a thick fluid. These cysts can sometimes cause pain and, depending on their size, may even restrict joint movement.

Diagnosis is made by physical examination, imaging techniques, or aspiration.

In treatment, if there is pain, splinting and anti-inflammatory medications are used in an attempt to reduce the size of the cyst. The cyst can be aspirated with a syringe, but there is a high risk of recurrence.

For patients who do not benefit from these approaches, the cyst can be surgically removed. Even in cases where the cyst is removed surgically, there is still a small chance of recurrence.
