In early stages of first carpometacarpal joint arthritis/osteoarthritis, splints are used as part of the treatment.
This condition refers to arthritis of the joint at the base of the thumb. Patients experience difficulty with tasks that require gripping. Opening jars or, in advanced stages, turning a key in a lock can become extremely painful.
Diagnosis is made through a careful physical examination and X-ray imaging. It is important to distinguish it from other conditions that may cause pain in the same area.
In early stages, splints are used as part of the treatment. Anti-inflammatory medications and steroid injections may also be helpful.
For patients who do not benefit from non-surgical treatments, surgical options should be considered.
