Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, as the disease progresses, muscle atrophy is observed in the areas of the palm close to the thumb.
In Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, as the disease progresses, muscle atrophy is observed in the areas of the palm close to the thumb.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome results from the compression of the median nerve at the level of the wrist.
Numbness and tingling occur, especially in the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. As the disease advances, muscle atrophy can be observed in the areas of the palm near the thumb.
Patients often complain of interrupted sleep due to pain in the same area during the night. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be seen in individuals who use hand tools such as keys or screwdrivers, those who write for long periods using a keyboard, musicians who play the guitar or violin, as well as in certain medical conditions (hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes), and during pregnancy.
Diagnosis is made through a careful examination and EMG (electromyography). In the early stages, non-surgical treatments (such as splinting, pain relievers) may be tried. In advanced stages of the disease, surgical treatment is applied.
